Rarely is it just one thing, which is why mental health deserves a whole-person approach that treats the body and mind as connected rather than competing explanations.
What Is Vitamin D (and Why Does It Matter for the Brain)?
Most people think of vitamin D as the nutrient that’s important for healthy bones. While that’s true, it barely scratches the surface of what vitamin D actually does. It functions more like a hormone than a traditional vitamin: your body produces it when your skin is exposed to ultraviolet B (UVB) rays from sunlight, and once activated, it influences systems throughout the body, including several that affect brain function.
Researchers have identified vitamin D receptors in areas of the brain involved in mood regulation, memory, learning, and emotional processing, and some propose it plays a role in brain energy metabolism and neurotransmitter systems tied to mood. These remain active areas of investigation rather than settled science, a direct causal link to symptoms like fatigue or brain fog hasn’t been established in humans, but the biological plausibility is well documented.

Many people assume that’s simply what winter feels like. For some, that’s true. It’s to start with the fundamentals, understanding what’s happening in your body and making informed decisions based on evidence rather than assumptions.
1. Prioritize Safe Sunlight Exposure
Sunlight is the body’s primary source of vitamin D. During Canada’s long winters, spending time outside often isn’t enough on its own, since the sun’s angle can significantly limit production. Whenever practical, safe sun exposure can also support healthy sleep patterns.
2. Don’t Guess, Talk to Your Provider About Testing
Routine testing isn’t recommended for every healthy adult. It’s most useful when risk factors are present. When appropriate, a blood test measuring serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] is the best indicator of vitamin D status.
3. Supplement When Appropriate

They consistently work on the fundamentals, they sleep well most nights, move their bodies regularly, eat reasonably well most of the time, build meaningful relationships, and manage stress as best they can. Before searching for the newest supplement or wellness trend, it’s worth asking: am I sleeping enough, moving regularly, spending time outdoors, eating a balanced diet, managing stress, and maintaining meaningful relationships? There isn’t usually one secret. Vitamin D may be one important piece of the puzzle. It is rarely the entire puzzle.
