Workplace, Insurance & NIHB Coverage

In Ontario, counselling is usually accessed through OHIP-covered physician services, private insurance, or federal coverage programs.

  • OHIP coverage: OHIP covers mental health care provided by psychiatrists, family physicians with psychotherapy training, and hospital-based outpatient programs. Private therapy with Registered Psychotherapists, Psychologists, or Registered Social Workers is generally not covered by OHIP.
  • Extended health benefits: Many workplace benefit plans cover Registered Psychotherapists and Registered Social Workers, often with annual limits ranging from $500 to $2,500+.
  • NIHB mental health coverage: Eligible First Nations and Inuit clients may receive up to 22 hours of private mental health counselling per calendar year when the therapist is an approved NIHB provider.

NIHB And Private Coverage Note

If you are using workplace benefits or NIHB coverage, it is worth checking provider eligibility before booking so you know whether sessions can be reimbursed directly or claimed afterward.

Private Counselling & Therapy

Virtual therapy can make province-wide access easier, especially outside major urban centres or when you need a specialized fit.
